About the campaign

Young Trustee aims to "ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels" (SDG 16.7) across Scotland's third sector leadership.

Our goal is to match 250 organisations with 250 new

young trustees by September 2019.

To achieve this, we will:

  • Raise Awareness

We will raise awareness of the opportunities and benefits of trusteeship among young people, through outreach activities and events.

Less than 0.5% of trustees are aged 18-24. Young people can offer new talent, a fresh perspective and different views, filling a skill or experience gap in a boards’ membership.

  • Encourage Organisations

We will encourage organisations to feel confident about appointing and engaging young people on their boards and recognise that diversity is a key aspect of good governance.

59% of charity boards are not representative of the communities they serve. Professional trustee recruitment will lead to a more effective board and enable our charitable organisations to deliver quality and representative services to our communities.

  • Advertise Vacancies

We will advertise trustee vacancies on our online jobs board and promote these opportunities across our networks and channels.

74% of charities struggle to fill vacancies. Our jobs board aims to match enthusiastic and passionate young people with suitable trustee vacancies. Opening vacancies to a wider audience can create a strong and diverse team to lead change on important issues and causes.

This project has been awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, supporting the Scottish Government's Year of Young People 2018.

Developed by the team at the International Voluntary Service, the campaign also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 for Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions and its targets.
